Premier opens new ‘Library at the Dock’ centrepiece at Docklands

Premier Denis Napthine today joined Planning Minister Matthew Guy and Lord Mayor Robert Doyle to open ‘Library at the Dock’, a new state-of-the-art library and community centre located in the heart of Docklands.

Speaking at the launch of ‘Library at the Dock’, Dr Napthine said the new centre would provide the local community with a great place to meet, read a book and enjoy a coffee, or study.

“’Library at the Dock’ will act as a vital hub for this growing community and ensure we are continually improving the liveability of Docklands,” Dr Napthine said.

“It will provide world-leading spaces for all members of the Docklands and wider community to learn, explore and enjoy.”

The $23 million library and community centre is a joint initiative of the state government developer Places Victoria, Lend Lease and the City of Melbourne.

“This project has been a priority for local residents and is a great example of what can be achieved when governments work together with local organisations, the private sector and the Docklands community,” Dr Napthine said.

The library’s state-of-the-art facilities include digital and traditional library collections, a recording studio, editing suites, and a gallery and exhibition space that recognises Docklands’ heritage.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the library also fulfils a vision for environmental excellence by creating Melbourne’s most sustainable civic landmark.

“Constructed primarily from cross laminated timber and recycled hardwood, Library at the Dock has been rated with a six-star green-star energy efficiency, making it Australia’s most sustainable community building,” Mr Guy said.

“The library is located at the iconic new intersection of Collins and Bourke streets, maximising views from the park through to the water.”

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the building was the product of great minds and rare talents.

“We have delivered a world class building, through a unique partnership, that will serve Melbourne and Docklands for generations to come,” Cr Doyle said.

‘Library at the Dock’ is part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Docklands Community and Place Plan, aimed at making the Docklands one of Australia’s most liveable suburbs.

The Coalition Government is also investing $18 million for a new park and community oval in north-west Docklands as part of the Community and Place Plan.

The government has also invested $20 million to improve public transport in Docklands including extending tram services down Collins Street right to the door of the new library.

“The Coalition Government is committed to investing in major infrastructure projects and world class community facilities in Docklands to further enhance the liveability of this great area,” Dr Napthine said.
