Adelaide: New high school for CBD and inner suburbs students
The State Government will deliver on its election promise to build a second high school in the city.
The 2014-15 State Budget includes $85 million over five years to construct the school on the current Royal Adelaide Hospital site, with capacity for 1000 students.
Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the new school will allow more parents to send their children to high school in the city.
“With a special focus on health and science, this will be a first class facility that will nurture the health researchers of the next generation,” Mr Koutsantonis said.
“The city high school will be opened for Term 1, 2019 and will be the beginning of the transformation of the old RAH site.
“There was a clear message from the consultation process that using the old RAH site for education was a popular option.”
The funding includes $64 million over four years, plus a further $21 million in 2018-19.
Education Minister Jennifer Rankine said the State Budget also includes $14.2 million over four years to ensure school counsellors will be available to every public school student in the State by 2015-16.
Primary schools with less than 71 students will receive funding to access private counselling services.
The State Budget also includes:
- $1.8 million over four years for a “parent portal”, enabling mums and dads to communicate with teachers online, and keep up-to-date on their child’s attendance, grades and lesson plans.
- $2.5 million over four years to incorporate the Australian Curriculum into the South Australian Certificate of Education.
- $250,000 for a feasibility study, to determine the merits of a new school at Magill, which would cater to newborn children, all the way through to year 12, and include a centre for excellence for teacher training.
“Despite a brutal Federal Budget the State Government continues to invest in education, delivering on our election commitments to benefit children today and build a stronger South Australia for tomorrow,” Ms Rankine said.
