Infrastructure: Long-term lease negotiated for new Park ’n ride at Parafield

The State Government will be developing a new Park ‘n’ Ride at Parafield Airport after reaching an agreement with Parafield Airport Limited.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said there is a need to provide more parking spaces for local commuters as the current demand for parking exceeds capacity.

“Cars are being parked on local streets in Mawson Lakes, Parafield and Salisbury, creating problems for residents and traffic, so it is vital that we provide more options,” Mr Mullighan said.

“Park ‘n’ Rides are a great way of encouraging more people to use our public transport network to get to and from the city.”

The Government will call for tenders for the design and construction of this Park ‘n’ Ride, including access roads, a bike cage, lighting and CCTV.

Minister Mullighan said the new Parafield Park ‘n’ Ride would be constructed this financial year, with completion in the second half of 2015, and have a capacity of at least 400 vehicles. It will also support around 25 jobs for local workers.

Adelaide and Parafield Airport Managing Director Mark Young said the development of a Park ‘n’ Ride facility would benefit commuters, local residents and other airport users.

“This will improve transport access for northern suburbs residents and is an important development for the Parafield Airport community,” Mr Young said.

Construction also continues on the Seaman Road, Noarlunga Park ‘n’ Ride and the Smithfield Park n Ride with works due to be finalised by the end of October.

Once complete, these will increase the number of parking spaces by a total of 325 at these two locations.

Park ‘n’ Ride car parks encourage customers to park their car and then transfer to an Adelaide Metro public transport service to complete their journey.

The new facility is part of a State Government initiative to increase the capacity of Park ‘n’ Ride facilities for commuters; there are now more than 11,000 spaces, compared to 6,100 in 2002.

There are 72 Park ‘n’ Ride locations, and the State Government is also undertaking preliminary scoping works for additional Park ‘n’ Ride facilities at seven other sites including Golden Grove, West Lakes, Tambelin, Bellevue Heights, Crafers, Wayville and Morphettville/Glenelg sites.
