Draft plan to transform Burswood Peninsula

Planning Minister John Day today released the draft Burswood Peninsula District Structure Plan for public comment.

Mr Day said the draft plan would guide the transformation of the peninsula into a significant sporting, entertainment, residential, commercial and tourism precinct that had ‘something for everyone’.

Key elements include the new Perth Stadium, a redevelopment of Belmont Park with potential for a vehicle bridge to East Perth, the expansion of Crown Perth, and the creation of two new transit-oriented neighbourhoods around train stations at Belmont Park and Burswood.

The Minister said the eagerly awaited plan was the first time a long-term vision of this kind had been developed for the area and it was important for the community to have their say.

“The draft plan recognises the Burswood Peninsula as an ideal location to combine major sporting and recreational facilities, tourism and business opportunities with inner-city residential living,” he said.

“I encourage everyone who has a view to provide their feedback by November 25.”

Mr Day said Perth’s population was expected to grow by 500,000 by 2031 and the central location of the Burswood Peninsula represented a unique opportunity for the growing city.

“The peninsula has everything inner-city residents need – it’s close to the CBD, has exceptional public transport, an abundance of parklands, the Swan River, entertainment and, of course, the new Perth Stadium,” he said.

“From a planning perspective, the peninsula ticks all the boxes for appropriate high-density development.

“This plan has been prepared to guide the development of this important area and will be used by State and local governments to assess proposals and ensure the vision for the Burswood Peninsula is realised.”
