North West rail link powers ahead

The North West Rail Link has met another milestone as its second tunnel boring machine broke through after tunnelling more than 2 kilometres from Bella Vista.

Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian said that since tunnelling started about 6 months ago all four 900 tonne tunnel boring machines were now in the ground, which means the project is ahead of schedule and $300 million under budget.

“When the North West Rail Link opens in the first half of 2019, trains will run every four minutes in the peak and customers won’t need a timetable. You’ll be able to turn up and catch reliable, clean and modern rapid train services never-before-seen in Australia,” said Ms Berejiklian.

Ms Berejiklian also released designs for the new Norwest Station, one of 8 railway stations being delivered as part of the project.

“Norwest is one of the fastest growing employment centres in Sydney. About 15,000 people travel here for work every day, including from major Australian and international companies, and we expect this to increase to 30,000 by 2031,” she said.

“The North West Rail Link will change the way of life for people living and working in Sydney’s North West.”
