Green light for next stage of Kwinana Freeway widening

The Australian and Western Australian Governments are steaming ahead with the next stage of the Kwinana Freeway widening project by today announcing the successful tenderer for the southbound section from Armadale Road to Russell Road.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs said Brierty Contractors have been awarded a $13.5 million contract to construct the next stage, which involves adding three more lanes for 3.5 kilometres.

“More than 52,000 vehicles use this section of the freeway each day and this figure is expected to rise to 75,000 vehicles by 2021,” Mr Briggs said.

“We are wasting no time delivering the world class infrastructure Perth needs with construction due to begin in September and project completion by mid-2016.

“This project along with our other game changing infrastructure investments like the Perth Freight Link, NorthLink WA and Gateway WA will slash travel times for motorists and help unlock Western Australia’s economic capacity.”

The works follow on directly from the freeway widening between Roe Highway and Armadale Road, which will be completed in a few weeks, several months ahead of schedule.

Western Australian Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the addition of a third lane would be a significant safety improvement at a critical freeway merge point.

“This work will be delivered under budget due to a competitive marketplace for road construction,” Mr Nalder said.

“It’s all part of our plan to provide an integrated transport network for WA and improve traffic flow and safety.

“This has allowed us to deliver the benefits of this key infrastructure project earlier than expected as well as provide the best value for taxpayers’ money.”

The Australian Government is contributing $61.9 million to the $77.5 million overall project.
