New beach hub, new era for Scarborough

The revitalisation of Scarborough has taken a major step forward, with the adoption of the master plan and the call for an architect to design a new building for the future beach hub.
Planning Minister John Day today released the formally adopted master plan, which outlines the long-term vision to transform Scarborough into one of Australia’s best beachfronts.
“As part of the overall redevelopment of the area, Scarborough will see foreshore upgrades, including the creation of new play areas, green open spaces, a skate park, piazzas and boardwalks,” Mr Day said.
“There will also be new dining, shopping and entertainment options, and a range of events and activities for families and people of all ages to enjoy.”
Detailed design of the foreshore improvements will be undertaken by the newly appointed design consortium led by T.C.L. – Taylor Cullity Lethlean with UDLA and Arup.
One of the first areas to be realised will be the redevelopment of the existing Surf Lifesaving Club, a significant part of the new beach hub just south of the clock tower.
The Minister said the State Government was calling for an architecture firm to design a modern multi-use complex that would be a striking addition to the new look Scarborough foreshore.
“The complex will integrate seamlessly with new open spaces, play areas and the City of Stirling’s proposed pool as well as accommodate the Scarboro Surf Lifesaving Club and the city’s beach services,” he said.
The master plan also sets out the vision for the facilitation of private investment and the development of key sites across the 100 hectare project area.
Work is under way to develop a new planning framework for the Scarborough redevelopment area, including a new Redevelopment Scheme and Design Guidelines. The documents, to be released for public comment later this year, will guide private developments to ensure high quality outcomes that align with the area’s unique coastal character.
