Midland transformation forges ahead

Midland’s transformation into one of the State’s major strategic centres continues with completion of major infrastructure works and designs released for a new public space.

Planning Minister Donna Faragher said $9.7million allocated in this year’s State Budget would continue to build momentum for Midland’s revitalisation and adds to the $18.6million already invested in road upgrades, subdivision works and the provision of essential services to future development lots.

“This investment by the State Government has paved the way for private investment in the area with a number of new higher density developments planned or under construction within the historic Midland Workshops precinct,” Mrs Faragher said.

We are creating a dynamic urban village, a place where people can live, work and invest and an important economic hub for the eastern metropolitan region.

Minister Faragher said plans for a new Curtin Medical School to join other health facilities in the area including the GP Super Clinic, PlusLife Laboratory and the new $360milllion Midland Public and Private Hospital were driving demand for new housing and local employment options with significant private investment coming into the region.

“Construction of the new Victoria Quarter apartments is expected to be complete later this year with a 144-room short-stay hotel and two additional apartment buildings also planned for the Workshops precinct,” she said.

These developments are attracting new residents and visitors into the area, creating a lively community atmosphere and returning economic and social life to the much-loved Midland Workshops.

Mrs Faragher released today the first images of Railway Square, a makeover of Midland’s former railway shunting yard into a new community space that can be used for a range of events and activations.

Featuring a ceremonial railway line, Railway Square will pay homage to the site’s history and will incorporate a water feature, landscaping and public art as well as shade, seating and lighting displays.

A tender construction of Railway Square is expected to be released in the coming months with works due to commence in September 2016.
