Brisbane - Capital of the Sunshine State

Brisbane is a diverse emerging global city - a green city with a near perfect climate. It has one of the fastest growing populations and economies in Australia, but is also a city of uniqueness - from having its very own style of housing ('The Queenslander') to creating a major swimming beach right in the middle of its CBD.

Brisbane saw its resident population grow by almost 163,300 between 2001 and 2006 (+10.8%), which was the highest growth rate of all Capital Cities for this period. Most growth occurred in Brisbane's outer areas, along with pockets of strong growth in the inner suburbs and in the city centre where residential renewal and redevelopment had taken place.

More than one third of the city is made up of people who were born overseas - The most common birthplaces being:

  • United Kingdom and Ireland (19.3%),
  • South East Asia (mainly Viet Nam) (10.7%) and
  • North East Asia (mainly China) (9.1%).

Rental dwellings - totalled 191,375 in Brisbane (2006 Census), which accounted for 32.7% of all private dwellings. In 2006, 84.6% of these were rented from private landlords compared with 13.2% from the state housing authority. Rented dwellings were concentrated in the inner suburbs near the city centre, with approximately 75% of these in Bowen Hills and Fortitude Valley, (most were medium and high density). Dwellings in the inner city area were mainly rented from private landlords.

Queensland's economy continues to exhibit steady growth, with exports and government stimulus the main
catalysts.

The strengthening demand for the State's commodities and natural resources from the Asia region should drive export growth, with continued economic benefits for Queensland.

The underlying housing shortage in Queensland is approximately 40,000 dwellings.
