Perth - The City of Light

Located on the Swan River, at the Southern end of Australia's Western seaboard is the vibrant city of Perth. Known as Australia's sunniest capital city, Perth enjoys around 3000 hours of sunshine every year. No wonder it's been voted one of the world's most liveable cities.

Benefiting from being one of the nation's resource rich states, the population grew strongly and as seen in the last Census (2006) many suburbs in the greater Perth area increased in population by more than 50%.

Amongst them were the suburbs of Butler, Banksia Grove, Carramar, Tapping, Ashby, Hocking and Pearsall (in the north); Landsdale, Darch and Madeley (north-east); Jane Brook and Wattle Grove (in the east); and Canning Vale, Southern River, Success and Hammond Park (south). Large increases were also seen in the inner city suburb of East Perth. This growth was associated with an increase in medium to high-density housing.

Almost one third of the city is made up of people who were born overseas - The most common birthplaces were:

  • United Kingdom (37.8%),
  • South East Asia – mainly Malaysia (9.8%),
  • New Zealand (7.7%) and
  • Southern and Eastern Africa (7.5%).

Rented dwellings were concentrated around the city centre and the inner eastern suburbs. Crawley, West Perth, Highgate, East Perth and Maylands, on the northern side of the Swan River, saw more than 50% of their dwellings being rented. Most were medium and high-density housing and were rented from private landlords.

Economic growth is set to be supported by an upswing in business investment with major resource projects ramping up in coming years, whilst strong growth in the Asia region will boost demand for commodities
