Sydney - The Harbour City

Sydney is Australia's oldest and largest city, and is set on one of the world's most stunning harbours - itself fringed by beautiful sandy beaches. Sydney Harbour separates the city into north and south, with harbour side villages, and vibrant inner city areas showing off their own distinctive characters.

The city has a sunny, moderate climate which contributes to Sydneysiders' relaxed lifestyle and love of the great outdoors. It is no wonder that Sydney is the most populated city in the nation.

As recorded in the last Census (2006) substantial population growth linked with medium and high-density housing growth was seen in and around inner Sydney. The main increases were in the suburbs of Homebush Bay, Breakfast Point, Newington, Rhodes and Zetland.

More than one third of the city is made up of people who were born overseas - The most common birthplaces being:

  • New Zealand (6%).

Rental dwellings total 406,696 in Sydney (2006 Census), accounting for 33.4% of all private dwellings. In total 16.2% of these were rented from the NSW Department of Housing and 81.4% from private landlords. Almost two thirds of all rented dwellings in 2006 were in medium or high-density structures.

10 year history of House & Unit prices in Sydney

There were high levels of rented dwellings in the inner and near city suburbs, along with strips of rented dwellings extending from the city centre out along major
transport routes. Inner city suburbs with high rental densities include Haymarket, Woolloomooloo, Ultimo and Waterloo.

The Sydney residential property market recorded strong gains recently, driven in part by the state's housing shortage of approximately 86,000 dwellings.
